A BRIEF HISTORY

The Confederation was founded in 1995 through the efforts of 20 parents Associations who had already been working together for a number of years.

Italian Parents Associations were born as self-help groups, to better the living conditions of children with cancer and their accompanying parent during the long hospital stays, to adapt the chidren's cancer wards to the needs of the children for a friedlier environment, to support the families during the cancer experience through solidariety, education, and practical aid and assistance.

Fund raising for Clinics has become a very important part of the life of the Associations, and the funds are used for the purchase of scientific and medical equipment, for construction programs to adapt the aging hospitals to the standards required by modern therapeutic protocols, and for scholardhip programs for young pediatric doctors that serve not only to train new specialists in pediatric oncology but to supply badly needed help to insufficently numbered medical staffs. Almost all of the Bone Marrow Transplant Units were built with the help of Parent Association Funds.

Governement financial support of public health has been falling off year by year, greatly affecting our Clinics. Parent Associations have been assuming more and more of the financial burden, and the constant fundraising activities often necessarily override the principal activities for which the Associations were born, that of assistance to the children and their families.
